When an employee fails to follow your bar's procedure, policy, or set of standards, you need to address the issue so that it can be corrected and prevented from happening again. When disciplining an employee for a performance problem, many bar owners and managers use the following steps: Verbal warning Make sure you note in the employee's personnel file the date of the verbal reprimand. Written warning Use this form to formally document the infraction. Your goal here is to make sure the employee understands the problem and is aware of what steps to take to correct it. Suspension Use this step if you do not desire to terminate the employee. Dismissal If you find that the employee has not corrected the problem, and you conclude that they are no longer a good fit for your bar, then you should look to terminate them from your business. NOTE: it is very important to document every employee's file with the date, the nature of the reprimand, and whether the reprimand is verbal or written. Keeping accurate records will greatly assist you in making your case if the employee decides to seek unemployment compensation at some time in the future if they are ever terminated.
